Editorial & Content Policy
What we publish should be something you can act on with confidence. This is how we research, source, and maintain everything on Mixed Bag Sportsman.
How we research and source content
Our content is built on verified facts and firsthand knowledge from real anglers, hunters, guides, and captains. We don't guess. When a guide or species page makes a factual claim — a season window, a bag limit, a fee — it's drawn from a checkable source, not from memory or assumption. Where the on-the-water details come from working captains and contributors, the regulatory details come from official authorities.
For California fishing rules and regulations, our reference is the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). Seasons, license requirements, bag and size limits, and similar regulatory facts change, and CDFW is the authoritative source. We always recommend confirming current rules directly with CDFW before you fish, because regulations can change between our review cycles.
Accuracy and corrections
We work hard to get things right, but if we get something wrong, we want to fix it fast. If you spot an error — an outdated regulation, a price that's changed, a detail that doesn't match reality on the water — please tell us through our contact page. We review every report, correct verified errors promptly, and update the page so the next reader gets the accurate version. Corrections to substantive facts are reflected in the page's last-updated date.
How and when pages are updated
Outdoor information goes stale, so we keep our content on a maintenance schedule rather than publishing once and forgetting it:
- Seasonal pages— content tied to a fishing season or run is reviewed at season boundaries, so the page reflects what's actually happening when you're reading it.
- Cost and license guides — pages covering fees, license pricing, and similar figures are reviewed at least annually and carry a visible last-modified date so you can see how current the information is.
- Deals — every listed deal reflects real, current availability and is removed when a trip sells out or a captain withdraws it.
Our no-fabrication commitment
This is the line we won't cross. We do not invent reviews, prices, availability, or testimonials. We don't publish a deal that isn't real, manufacture a discount by inflating a "regular" price, or pass off made-up data as fact. If we can't verify something, we don't state it as true. Every charter deal we list has been submitted by a real captain and reviewed and approved before publication — you can read exactly how that works in how we vet deals.
Affiliate transparency
Mixed Bag earns a commission when anglers book certain deals through our links, and we believe you should always know that. Our editorial judgment is never for sale: a deal appears because it passed review, not because of what we might earn. For the full breakdown of how affiliate links work and how they're funded, see our affiliate disclosure.
